The outspoken Kitanga Parish Priest of Kabala Diocese Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda has said Ugandans should not hold the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party accountable for the amendment of the Age Limit bill, but a section of what he called “greedy” and perfidious Members of Parliament.
In an unprecedented and historic move, the Ugandan Parliament on Thursday night voted to extend the presidential and MPs’ terms of office from five to seven years, and according to Fr. Batanyenda, this was an act of betrayal to the people who voted them.
The priest, who likened the lawmakers to the biblical Judas Is Cariot, said by MPs accepting to be bribed, it was a reflection of disloyalty to their constituents, adding that they had also promised voters to only stay in power for 5 years and not 7.
“I am sure NRM can’t do this,” he said in an interview with ChimpReports, “It was just a few greedy MPs … It’s shameful, disrespectful, abominable to see that intelligent people can handle themselves like that as they are like Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus for just 30 cents.“
Michael Tumusiime (NRM, Mbarara Municipality) moved the motion to have term of Parliament, President, all other elective positions increased to 7years, with effect from current Parliament.
If the bill is signed by President Yoweri Museveni into law, politicians who were supposed to be reelected in 2021 will be reelected in 2023.
