Mali 132-39 Uganda
Uganda’s search for the first victory in the U18 Africa Women Championship is yet to beat fruits. The team lost heavily to Mali 132-39.
This is the second loss for the Junior Gazelles at the ongoing tourney in Maputo, Mozambique. Uganda had lost 29-63 to Angola earlier. The team had also lost all its games in previous tourneys in 2008 and 2016.
In a dominant performance, Mali won all the four quarters 31-4, 33-6, 27-12 and 41-17 in order.
Martha Nandutu collected 10 points for Uganda, Azidah Nabunya and Shadia Mbwali added 8 and 6 respectively as the team shot 15/43 on the field.
Alima Dembele (23 points), Ramatoulaye Keita (22) and Aminata Brahima Sangare (21) led the way for Mali.
Ali Mavita’s side who booked a place at the tourney via a wild card, will now face Congo DR in the last group B game.
About the FIBA U18 Championship:
The FIBA U18 Women’s African Championship is the elite tournament for the youth in Africa.
The inaugural edition of this 12-team championship was held in 1985 in Accra, Ghana, where Senegal clinched their maiden continental title in this age category.
To date, Mali has won the most titles, triumphing 6 times in 13 editions. On their side, Senegal and DR Congo have two titles under their belt.
This biennial tournament serves as the stage for the best African young players.
This year, the competition is held in the Mozambican capital city of Maputo. This is the second time that the country hosts the event after the 1996 edition.
The FIBA U18 Women’s African Championship 2018 will serve as a qualifier for the FIBA U19 World Championship 2019.
The winner and the runners-up will get their tickets for next year’s event. (FIBA info)
