Uganda National Men’s U18 Basketball side, the Junior Silverbacks have on Tuesday morning been flagged off for the Africa U18 Championship.
The tournament is set to be held in Bamako, Mali from 24th August to September 2nd, 2018.
Uganda who goes to Mali, via a wild card from FIBA, had finished second at the regional Zone V last month in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
This will be the 21st edition, played under the rules of FIBA, the world governing body for basketball, and the FIBA Africa thereof.
The finalists of this championship will earn the right to represent the continent at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup.
Flagging off the team at Uganda Olympic Committee offices, NCS’ David Katende urged the boys to ‘go out and compete’ to raise the country’s flag high.
In Mali, Uganda is to face up with nine other nations – Angola, Egypt, Tunisia, Rwanda, Senegal, Algeria, DR Congo, Mali and Guinea.
The tourney is going to be played under a round Robin format with each team taking on its fourth opponents in the group, before the knockout stage.
“We are looking forward to a great tourney, and we wish our team the best in Mali,” noted Grace Kwizera, FUBA’s Marketing and Media.
