Zimbabwe’s captain Knowledge Musona has admitted that, on paper, the team is the least favorite in group A to do wonders at the African cup of Nations.
The warriors are placed in a tough group A that has hosts Egypt, DR Congo and East African powerhouse Uganda.
Musona has already labelled Egypt as the most favourites to take the title but has respect for DR Congo and Uganda who, in his words, have good teams.
He went further to rank the warriors as underdogs in the group but warned of a surprise run like that witnessed in the UEFA Champions League when an underrated Ajax from Amsterdam defied odds to reach the semi-final while whipping several big wigs on their way.
“We have the hosts and they are always going to be favourites. DR Congo have a strong team and they will know what to expect from us. Uganda are a very good team also,” said Musona on Cafonline.
He added: “Zimbabwe are the only underdog in the group, but that in itself should give is motivation to say we are the Ajax Amsterdam of the Nations Cup. We are going there to fight and give disappointment to other teams.”
Zimbabwe will be making only their fourth appearance at the grand stage and will be hoping to make it past the group stage for the first time after failing thrice in 2004, 2006 and in 2017. Musona states that they have learnt from mistakes from the past and will be aiming to go one better this year.
“We have a good team with good quality, and we are working hard to correct the mistakes from the last tournament. We have enough experience and our initial target is to pass out from the group stages for the first time.”
