It is now confirmed that Uganda Cranes will play the Lions of Teranga from Senegal in the round if 16 of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Uganda qualified as runners up in group A behind winners Egypt and was scheduled to play their equivalent in group C.
The Lions of Teranga needed to resuscitate their campaign after losing 1-0 to Algeria on the second day. They did that in convincing fashion when they mauled Uganda’s neighbours, Kenya 3-0 on the final group game played on Monday night.
Senegal, who controlled 66% of possession were kept by the nervy Kenyans in the first half that also saw Liverpool star Sadio Mane miss a penalty.
They returned with better plans in the second period with Ismaqily Sarr unlocking the East Africans just after the hour.
The striker kept his cool to control a cross from the right wing that Kenya’s defence had failed to handle, chested it down and hit a volley into the back of the net.
Mane doubled the lead eight minutes later. The striker stuck in Kenya’s half as they threatened from a corner kick on the other side, the ball was cleared forward, Musa Mohammed failed to deal with it allowing Mane to pounce on it, advanced and slotted past the keeper.
He made amends of the missed first half penalty when he stubbed a second one past the keeper in the 77th. Ismailly Sarr had been brought down by Philemon Otieno inside the box. The Kenyan defender was sent off for a second booking.
In the other match, Tanzania finished their tournament on a low losing 3-0 to Algeria. The loss meant that they bow out without a single point.
