Denis Onyango once again proved why he is regarded as the continent’s best goalkeeper when he pulled a series of spectacular saves to earn a point for Uganda against Zimbabwe.
The keeper was severally called to action to patch up for his leaky defence that lacked Simba SC centre back Murshid Jjuuko.
The keeper had sevral saves but the most eye-catching one came in the second half when Billiat, again, weaved through the defence, cut in near the edge of the box and belted a powerful low strike.
Onyango who had come out of his line, attempted to block the ball but it deflected off his leg and bounced on the line.
The keeper quickly pulled up and dived to swipe the ball before it crossed the line, thanks to his experience.
“It was a very good and important save,” Onyango narrates, “because Zimbabwe were already counting 2-1. Everyone stopped to watch and I had to stand up and save. I decided to dive and parry it away because
if I attempted to grab, I would have entered into the net with the ball. I used experience. Otherwise, I think generally the boys put up a good show.”
The keeper has one clean sheet to his name already.
