Hosts Egypt started their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a slim 1-0 win over a resilient Zimbabwe Warriors on Friday night as the tournament got underway.
The home fans gave a glimpse of the unwavering support they have prepared to back the team with their traditional red colors inside a fully packed 75,000-seater Cairo international stadium.
The Pharaohs started the game in commanding fashion with numerous attacks led by Liverpool star Mohammed Salah but Warriors’ keeper Edmore Sibanda stood firm in goal with countless saves.
However, the keeper could only do as much as the decibels inside the stadium voiced up.
Mahmoud Trezeguet found the breakthrough with only four minutes to the break.
The winger swung in a curling shot to beat the keeper. Egypt now lead group A with three points as Uganda and DR Congo prepare to battle on Saturday afternoon at the same stadium.
