Uganda Cranes have already qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with one game to spare.
However, as the team heads to the final game against neighbours Tanzania, the team captain Denis Onyango says there is all to play for.
“I think we have done and still doing enough preparations for the match. Everyone is in good shape with no injuries,” Onyango said after the team drew 1-1 with Egyptian side El Geish.
Derby bragging rights
Matches between two neighbours, always referred to as derbies, have always been heated whether they are competitive or mere friendly games and Onyango feels this one is not any different.
“This is an East African derby that we want to win even if we have already qualified. It is important that we keep the winning momentum and carry it to the Afcon and that means we have to work hard and perform well,” he said.
According to Onyango, the stiff competition for places in the team allows no room for complacency as every player eyes a seat in the plane to Egypt.
The bulky keeper has kept five clean sheets in the five qualifiers and is seeking to make history by keeping his goals clean in Dar Es Salaam.
“Everyone here wants to play and the competitions for places pushes us to fight hard and perform. I believe the guys are really focussed and ready to win the game in Tanzania. I want us to finish the qualifiers without conceding a goal and everyone is working for that.”
The match will take place on Sunday afternoon at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam.
