At least 14 United Nations peacekeepers under the MONUSCO (United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC) were killed in a fire exchange with suspected rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
The rebels are said to have raided a MONUSCO Company Operating base at Semuliki in Beni Territory in the North Kivu Province.
The attack according to a UN press statement took place this evening.
Another 53 peacekeepers are reported to have been injured in the assault.
Maman Sidikou, the Head of MONUSCO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in DRC condemned the attack
“Attacks against those who are working in the service of peace and stability in the DRC are cowardly and constitute serious violations,” he said, warning that MONUSCO would “take all actions to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable and brought to justice.”
