Besigye was in company of Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Kawempe Mayor Mubarak Munyagwa and other opposition activists when stick-wielding men smashed the former’s Land Cruiser brand car.
The windscreens were shattered and smoke was seen billowing from the car’s interior.
Chimp Corps say the attacked politicians were quickly whisked away and escorted to their respective homes under tight security.
On Saturday morning, Besigye camped at Kawempe Police Station in search of the damaged car. He also challenged the detention of his driver.
Several FDC supporters had started gathering at the police facility in show of solidarity with the troubled politician when security personnel swung into action.
According to Francis Mwijukye, an FDC member, “Besigye has been manhandled and pushed into a police van UP 1928 and driven away from Kawempe Police Station amidst heavy security.”
Besigye’s whereabouts are currently unknown.
Police publicist Judith Nabakooba and her deputy Vincent Ssekate were not readily available for comment.
Opposition activists have in the recent past engaged security forces in running battles. While Police accuse opposition of holding “illegal protests” that lead to destruction of property and lives especially in Kampala, activists blame the law enforcement of infringing on their freedom of assembly and using excessive force to crush dissent.
