The Electoral Commission has finalized preparations for conducting elections of Village Youth Committees and voting will take place today Monday 17th August 2020 in all the 68,741 villages across the country where these positions are being contested.
The Electoral Commission acting spokesperson Paul Bukenya says more than 7.5 million young people registered to participate in the exercise.
“We have 68,741 villages where we have organized elections for Special Interest Groups and our youth register has more than 7.5 million young people who registered for purposes of these elections. These elections will be conducted by voters who are the members of the electoral college lining behind the individual candidates of their choice or their symbols, their portraits or their agents,” said Bukenya on Monday,” he said.
The village/ cell youth councils consist of youth who reside in the village/ cell and who are willing to be members of the village/ youth cell council.
The youth committee shall have the elective offices consisting of chairperson, vice chairperson, General Secretary, Publicity Secretary, Secretary for women youth who shall be female, Secretary for student affairs who shall be a student, Secretary for labour affairs, Secretary for sports and culture and Secretary for finance.
“The members of the youth committee shall be elected by members of the youth council from among their number,” said Bukenya.
The youth committee elections shall be conducted by voters lining behind candidates’ portraits or candidates’ symbols or candidates’ agents or individual candidates of their choice.
All the persons participating in the election, Bukenya said must comply with Ministry of Health guidelines against the spread of COVID-19 such wearing a masks, hand washing, social distancing, sanitizing among others.
