The Fresh Diary Secondary School Games also known as the Ball Games 1 were officially flagged off by the Physical Education Commissioner, Hon. Omara Apita Lameck on Tuesday.
The grand ceremony held at the St Mary’s Kitende (SMAK) stadium was graced by several VIPs including from the Uganda Secondary School Sports Association (USSSA), Fresh Diary among others.
This year’s National finals will be hosted from 1st to 10th May this year at St Joseph Laibi and Sacred Heart SS in Gulu district.
The 2020 edition has been boosted by government support through the provision of three basketball courts.
“We thank Fresh Diary that has tireless supported the development of sports in Secondary Schools and as the government, we have also provided three basketball courts in Gulu were the finals will be held. So we are excited about the increase in the number of participants and we hope to see a successful campaign,” Omara said.
The USSSA president, Patrick Okanya could not hide his joy about the success and increase of the number of participants in the competition.
“This year, the Fresh Diary Secondary School Games have registered an increase in participation of students from approximately Four Hundred Eighty thousand in 2019 to approximately Six Hundred thousand in 2020. The total number of disciplines to be competed in will remain at seven (7) as in 2019.”
These games will include basketball (men and women), Rugby 15’s (men only), Tennis (men and women), Table Tennis (men and women), Hockey (men and women), Badminton (men and women) and Basketball (men and women).
The competition starts on 6th and run till 31st March, 2020 with district qualifiers followed by the Zonal qualifiers scheduled for 1st – 19th April 2020.
The Marketing Manager Fresh Dairy, Vincent Omoth pointed out the benefits of their sponsorship and the success of the Secondary School Games.
“As title sponsors of the Fresh Dairy Secondary School Games we are humbled by the role we are playing in growing the stature of Uganda’s secondary schools games. Fresh Dairy’s sponsorship essentially serves to nurture the sporting talent of our youth while highlighting the need for health and nutrition using our products. We believe in developing a complete individual in terms of Sports, Academia and Health.”
Omoth also remarked that Fresh Dairy has unveiled three University scholarships for the best performing students in Basketball (2) and Rugby (1) who were tasked to score atleast 19 points in their 2019 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) Examinations.
This year’s scholarships details and the winners of last year’s scholarships will be announced during the course of this year following the recently released 2019 UACE results, after a proper vetting process.
The event is part a five year contract signed between Fresh Dairy and USSSA worth 3 Billion, Eight Hundred Eighty-Five Million Uganda Shillings (3,885,000,000 Ushs) to boost sports in secondary schools across Uganda.
The seven games attracted a total of 188 teams, which will compete in the different sports disciplines.
Basketball has 48, Football Girls U20 will produce 32 teams, Rugby 15′ with 12, while Hockey, Badminton, Table Tennis and Tennis will each comprise of 24 participating teams.
Qualification rounds: 6th – 31st March 2020 (All USSSA sports districts)
Zonal qualifiers: 1st – 19th April 2020 (All zonal areas)
National Finals: 1st – 10th May 2020 (Gulu District: St. Joseph Layibi & Sacred Heart S.S)
