“Yes, no problem,” said Mbabazi when asked whether he was ready to relinquish his SG seat as he promised to the NRM caucus after being appointed Prime Minister last year.
“But I do organize things. I will do what is in the best interest of the party and the country,” Mbabazi clarified.
The revelation comes against the backdrop of threats from the NRM youth to storm the party headquarters along Kyadondo Road in Kampala on Friday to forcefully evict Mbabazi.
The NRM youth coordinator Ray Kamugisha says during their stay at Kyadondo, the youth will hold a debate under the topic “The Pursuance of zero tolerance to corruption: what are the roles and responsibilities of NRM Youth?”
“We are reformists. We need not only to secure our destiny but also try to answer our generational calls which you can call a mission,” said Kamugisha.
“Mbabazi should choose between Secretary General and Prime Minister. He has so far failed,” added Kamugisha.
“Our target is to build a party like ANC or CCM. We need very strong party structures…” added.
“We need to prepare ourselves for leadership because you can hardly find anything or even any one at Kyadondo party head office. What kind of party is that?” wondered Kamugisha.
Mbabazi has in the past resisted pressure to stand down as SG despite promising to relinquish the coveted position after being appointed Prime Minister last year.
The embattled SG also downplayed reports that NRM was staring down on a possible split as internal infighting hits boiling levels.
“Very unlikely. Debate in a democratic institution is healthy unless it degenerates into intrigue and cliquisim,” said Mbabazi.
