At least five soldiers of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) were severely wounded and one LDU killed in a shootout between government forces and cattle rustlers in Karamoja region.
The incident happened Saturday at Namayire parish, Anyagara sub county in Kotido district when the notorious Turkana cattle rustlers raided Uganda to steal cows.
Reports indicate that the Turkana teamed up with their counterparts the Matheniko from Moroto district and attacked a kraal belonging to the Karamajong community in Kotido district.
It is said that the kraal that came under attack by the armed group is heavily guarded by police Anti Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), UPDF and LDU.
It has 2732 heads of cattle belonging to the local community.
Police says in the process of exchange of fire, security teams shot down 3 Turkana worriers and recovered two guns.
However, though the forces foiled the attempted, it registered five causalities and one death.
In a security brief on Monday, authorities identified the injured as Cpl. Asimwe Robert, Private Asuman Musisi, Ochola Jacob, Odega Godfrey, and Mathias Kyakaire all attached to the UPDF 43rd battalion at Karena and were flown to Kampala for further treatment.
One of the victims was severely wounded and underwent a surgery at Nakasero hospital when a bullet got stuck in his back near the spinal cord.
All cows were recovered except three which died from bullet shots.
The security of this region has lately become fragile with mores such raid.
Such clashes also recently attracted the attention if senior security commanders such as the CDF Gen. David Muhoozi and Police’s Maj.Gen.Sabiiti Muzeeyi who visited the area to come up with new security strategies to flash out the attackers from Kenya also some from the local community.
