5 Arrested in Kanungu in Anti-Baryomunsi Protests

Police on Saturday was engaged in running battles with supporters of Deus Nkwasibwe, one of the runners-up in NRM primary elections for Kinkizi East, after they staged a demonstration over what they called massive rigging.

The youthful supporters staged the protest at Omukatoojo Trading Center at an intersection leading to Kanungu District Headquarters and Kihihi Town where transport was paralysed close to 4 hours.

The demonstrators carried placards with messages condemning Kinkizi East Member of Parliament Dr Chris Baryomunsi whom they accused of fermenting voter bribery and rigging.

The demonstrators burnt logs of wood and car tyres in the middle of road which blocked transport to and from Kanungu.

The Police, however immediately swung into action and dispersed the demonstrators and arrested about 5 of them and detained them at Kanungu District Police Station.

The Police resorted to use tear gas after a large number of crowds started forming in the Trading Center.

The Police was later reinforced by Field Force Unit (FFU) from Kanungu District.

Efforts to talk to Kanungu District Police Commander were futile as his known phones were not available.

The Kanungu District NRM Returning officer Alex Turyahikayo announced incumbent Kinkizi East MP Hon Chris Baryomunsi as a winner in the just concluded primary elections where he was contesting with Deus Nkwasibwe, Oscar Kasya and Francis Nuwagaba.
