A joint team of security agencies is investigating a prison break that happened this Saturday afternoon in the West Nile district of Arua.
According to Police, this happened at around 2:00pm when an unconfirmed number of male inmates stormed out of the correctional facility.
Speaking to ChimpReports, the West Nile police spokesperson SP Josephine Angucia said the prisoners first undressed their uniforms before running away.
“In the attempt, four of them were shot dead and five have been arrested currently undergoing interrogations by our detectives,” she said.
Despite the killing and some arrests, Angucia said that they are still pursuing more who escaped in the fracas.
“The regional Police Commander and regional CID have now joined the team in the field to hunt down the remaining suspects. I can not accertain their number but we managed to recover 30 uniforms from the scene,” she said.
“This is developing story, we shall keep you updated.”
On the claims of gun grabbing in this incident, the police mouthpiece told Chimp Corps said no gun was lost and that security personnel were not injured.
Meanwhile, sources that preferred anonimity intimated to ChimpReports that the attack on the facility was organised by a yet to be identified criminal gang with the aim of getting out one of their members who was sentenced there recently.
They further revealed that there was a security breach before the jail break.
Efforts to reach the prisons administration were futile by press time as they could not answer our repeated calls.
