At least four mothers and 38 babies have died in Kabale district since the Covid19 lock down was announced in March this year.
This was revealed today by Alfred Besigensi, the Kabale acting District Health Officer.
Besigensi says that this is according a survey in health facilities across the district conducted between April and June this year.
The DHO says 18 of the babies died during birth while 6 died within the first week of birth.
The district also recorded 18 fetal intrauterine deaths.
Meanwhile, according to the DHO, four mothers who died arrived at health facilities with complications.
He says this was largely because the mothers couldn’t make it to the health facilities in time because of transport hardships.
He however, says despite the loss, 1938 babies were born normally.
In most of these cases, he says, the mothers arrived late, some with serious complications but health workers played their part.
