Otunnu thrilled the audience when he announced veteran politician Prof. Edward Kakonge as new party chairman to replace sacked Maj. Edward Rurangaranga. Kakonge joined UPC in 1960.

Otunnu further promoted South West coordinator Gideon Twinomugisha as the vice chairperson for the region, replacing Ndiwa Ndikora.

In his address today January 4 at Uganda House, Otunnu named David Innocent Nyote secretary for Information and Research, effectively sealing the fate of Moses Nuwagaba.

In the new Cabinet, the motar-mouthed Patrick Guzi Aroma takes over as the new National Youth leader, taking over from Cecilia Anyakot who threw in the towel last week.

The announcement comes at a time when Otunnu is facing a serious internal rebellion for sacking Rurangaranga, John Odit and David Pulkol.

UPC MPs led by Obua Ogwal have been mobilising the youth to end Otunnu’s leadership which they say is tainted with inefficiency.

Observers say Otunnu is simply buying time since top shots in the party have finalised plans of ousting him forcefully.
