Three Primary School pupils have yesterday been confirmed dead and 78 others critically injured after lightning struck at Mungoyo Primary School in Yumbe district at around 9:30am.
The deceased were identified as Munduru Consulate, 10, in P.2, Asimba Norman, 9, P.2 and Ezasurubo Lauren, 9, P.2.
According to Red Cross Branch Manager Mr. Patrick Geria, Red Cross team rushed to the scene and managed to rush 60 pupils to a health facility for medical attention.
He added that though 53 children have been discharged, “25 are still in critical condition and have not shown any signs of recovery since yesterday.”
The Red Cross Branch Manager noted that the lightning was as a result of a heavy down pour that happened yesterday in Yumbe.
He added that the rainfall did not affect only schools but also other locals within the area leading to two more deaths at Pangirinya refugee settlement camp.
The deceased at the refugee camp were identified as Away Litari, 4 and Ereneyo Tobe, 30 years old.
He noted that Uganda Red Cross conducted assessment but the process was disrupted by continued heavy rains.
The numbers of affected to be confirmed after full rapid assessment.
