Machar Meets IGAD Chief Negotiator

Mesfin over the stalled peace talks which were suspended last month.

“Dr. Machar met the ambassador (Mesfin) days ago to find a way of returning to the table of dialogue. They took some good time in the meeting and we expect positive resolution to be communicated soon,” a source told Chimpreports on Saturday.

The talks which expected to pave way for the formation of an ‘inclusive’ and ‘transitional’ government by mid-August crumbled when rebels stormed out of the conference room in Addis Ababa, questioning the criteria used to select stakeholders to the negotiations.

Meanwhile sources in SPLM-IO also told us the same about the meeting of the two to revive the peaceful dialogue as frontline heats up in the Upper Nile and Unity states.

According to the negotiator IGAD, talks were suspended due to a boycott by the rebels who could not let the talks to continue.


Machar has in recent months embarked on foreign trips to woo diplomatic support for his rebel movement.

While Machar wants to be President of the transitional government, Kiir says he can only leave the office when voted out of power by those who elected him.
