“We did not have electricity last night but on return, it burnt the box. In a space of seconds, fire had started spreading to Avemar Building which is home to hundreds of traders,” said Mercy Nakyobe, a trader in the neighbourhood.
“Fortunately, officials at the Barclays Bank which is located near the electricty box, used fire extinguishers to stop the fire. They were later supported by the Police Fire Brigade,” added Nakyobe.
Deputy Police Fire Brigade Chief Hassan Kihanda said an investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the fire.
“We have been told that this is the third time this box is being gutted by fire. We are going to set up a technical team to ensure that such an incident does not happen again,” said Kihanda.
Anti-riot police personnel were heavily deployed around the building to maintain law and order.
Business resumed after traders were assured of their safety.
Kihanda says most fire incidents in urban areas are caused by electricity short circuits.
