At the start of May this year, the President visited Luweero where he called upon those who were intending to stand against the official flag bearer as independents to unite and harmonize for the good of the party.
“NRM is gaining everywhere so we have to agree on one candidate to increase our chances of winning this by-election,” he was quoted as saying.
While addressing NRM local leaders during their consultative meeting at the Kasana Archdiocese open grounds, Mr Museveni emphasised unity if the party was to secure the Parliamentary seat.
Luweero Woman MP seat fell vacant after the Appellate Court ruled that former MP, Brenda Nabukenya, vacates the seat on grounds that the process which brought her to Parliament was not conducted in accordance with the law.
In the ruling, Court emphasised that the Electoral Commission didn’t comply with electoral laws when in November 2011 Nabukenya’s political rival Rebecca Lukwago Nalwanga sought a mandatory vote recount.
The Electoral Commission has set May 22, as the date for the by-election.
Five contestants from the NRM including Rebecca Nalwanga, Dr Elizabeth Lugudde, Ramlah Kadala, Lilian Nakate, Ms Jimiya Ssenkanja and Rita Mugalu declared their interest in the seat.
