“The suspect was arrested on Monday (12, May) for defiling and impregnating a relative to his wife after a tip off from the spouse and detained at Kyengera Police Station before being taken to court.”

Kaweesi added that on the fateful day (Wednesday) at around 8:00pm, his relatives brought him food but a few minutes later, he used this opportunity and escaped before being detected by officers who ran after him.

“They alerted other people that he was a thief and so joined the chase before being arrested in the nearby trading centre where he was thoroughly beaten before being returned to the police cells.”

He was pronounced dead the next morning.

According to Kaweesi, the officers in charge of the police station claim that the suspect died as they took him to hospital but he hurried to note that relatives told him that he was never taken to police after the flogging which led to his death due to the injuries sustained.

“We have arrested and detained both the OC station, Jackson Mawumbe and OC CIID, Edison Karuhanga at Nsambya barracks as we wait for the charges against them,” explained the police boss, adding, that Police has contacted a magistrate to carry out inquest into the circumstances before a report is released and culprits are brought to book.
