• Uganda vs South Sudan – St. Mary’s stadium, Kitende
Uganda Cranes head coach Jonathan McKinstry expects a very stubborn opponent in South Sudan but remains confident in his side’s chance of progression.
Uganda Cranes host the Bright Stars on Thursday evening at the St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, behind closed doors and seeking maximum points to stretch their lead to ten points in group B.
McKinstry believes his boys are in good shape to display a spirited fight but is worried of the shocker the stubborn opponents could cause to his side.
“We are in good condition, the players are in good spirit and we know we must put up a good performance to get the result. We expect a stubborn opponent and if you look at their previous nine games, all of them have not had goals of more than one goal margin so they have won by a single goal, drawn or lost by a single goal,” he said.
He added, “The days of South Sudan conceding 3-4 goals are gone now. The current South Sudan team is well organised, well coached and we need to make sure that we can break that resilience of theirs. We don’t expect an easy afternoon.”
Three international players in Alex Kakuba, Alexis Bakka and Uche Ikeapezu Mubiru were earlier summoned for the tie but pulled out on the 11th hour.
Kakuba and Mubiru sustained injuries at their respective clubs while Bakka failed to secure traveling documents in time amidst being said to have contacted the COVID-19.
Defender Murushid Jjuuko, Bevis Mugabi and midfielder Taddeo Lwanga all featured in Cranes’ last qualifier against Malawi at Namboole last year but willl miss this duel.
