Two people in Kaungu district who were on Monday kidnapped by unidentified gunmen and taken to neighboring DRC have escaped.
The two have been identified as Ambrose Twinamasiko, 27, and Eldard Twinomujuni, 31, both from Nyakagyezi cell, in Butogota town council.
A third victim, Jacob Niwaga, aged 12, managed to escape immediately after the kidnap in the wee hours of Monday morning.
According to police, the three were kidnapped at around 1:40 am at Kyabuyorwa in Butogota town council, Kanungu district while travelling on motorcycle registration number UEX 355I from Kanyantorogo.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson says 4 men armed with 2 SGM riffles, a spear and machete trapped the victims by laying a rope across the road.
In the scuffle however, the 12-year boy managed to escape and run unhurt. The other two were led by the men across the border into DRC.
According to the police preliminary investigations, the kidnappers were dressed in civilian attire and had masks on their faces
They also spoke Swahili and Rukiga.
After crossing into DRC, Maate says the kidnappers fired three rounds, which attracted police to rush to the scene where the motorcycle was abandoned.
As the manhunt was underway however, the two captives managed to escape from the kidnappers on Tuesday morning.
“They escaped into different directions from the kidnappers at around 07:00 hours and have been got by police during a search at 18:00 hours,” Maate said.
“Ambrose was found at at Kyeshero border while Eldard was found at Kyabuyorwa.”
During a recent visit to the region, President Yoweri Museveni reassured residents near the Uganda-DRC border that the governments of both countries had made significant steps in cracking down on criminals involved in kidnaps.
