Inside Kiir, Machar Transitional Gov’t Deal

“I want to assure you that the party and army I’m leading will implement this agreement without fail,” he pledged.

“I’m not here to respond to what my brother here has said. I’m here to sign the peace agreement. I don’t want to talk about a coup or no coup – but a gun doesn’t fire itself. I cannot let my people continue bleeding. I am the president and responsible for all the people of South Sudan.”

His rival, Dr Riek Machar also reiterated his commitment on behalf of the movement he leads to a peaceful settlement as soon as possible.

“By signing this agreement, I’m sending the message that this war must be ended peacefully. I hope the other side will also do the same.”


He added: “The release of my comrades that have been charged with same charge as me creates an atmosphere for the ongoing talks to succeed.”

Machar said he had worries that the meeting might not bear fruit.

The two South Sudan leaders then held hands alongside South Sudan religious leaders as a sign of unity and togetherness.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn who mediated the talks, commended the IGAD Special Envoys for their extraordinary dedication to the South Sudan peace process.

He notified the two leaders that they owed it to their people to choose peace.

Inside the agreement

Premier Dessalegn revealed that the signed agreement entails an immediate end to the fighting and stopping of the killings.

“It’s with a sense of relief and guarded optimism that I announce a breakthrough in South Sudan peace process,” he said, adding that a transitional government would follow.

According to the Premier, the transitional unity government will oversee government functions in a transitional period and will implement critical reforms through IGAD led negotiation.

“The agreement between President Kiir and Dr. Machar entails establishing transitional government of national unity via all inclusive peace process.”

“It also entails Cessation of Hostilities within 24 hours and freezing of forces in current locations.”

The two leaders agreed to stop confrontations till a permanent ceasefire is reached.
