3 Oil Fields Closed As Clashes Ensue In Unity State

The oil producing Unity state which is a life line of South Sudan’s struggling economy fell to the defected Gen. James Koang Chuol last week.

Gen Koang declared himself governor after taking over the oil state and sacked all government officials upon which both the acting governor and his deputy fled for their dear lives.

The Unity Oil field is the largest and most significant oil field with 126 wells operated by the Greater Pioneer Operating Company.

The oil fields in Unity State produce at full capacity 115,000-120,000 barrels per day.


According to US market today Monday, a barrel of oil goes at $99 which means that the government of S. Sudan today lost $11.9m (Shs 30bn in Ugandan currency).

This is approximately half of the total export of 240,000 BPD (barrels per day) production.

The oil concession is held by Greater Nile Petroleum Company, a consortium of national oil companies from China, Malaysia, India and South Sudan.
