Karuhanga Retires As President of Tullow Oil

information pills sans-serif; letter-spacing: -0.2pt; line-height: 200%; font-size: small; color: #000000;”>According to Aidan Heavey, approved Chief Executive and Founder of Tullow Oil plc, Dr. Karuhanga has been an important adviser both to senior staff within Tullow Uganda and the wider Tullow Group.

“Dr. Karuhanga will not be replaced as President and Jimmy D. Mugerwa, General Manager of Tullow Uganda, will assume Mr. Karuhanga’s responsibilities,” Heavey said.

He added: “I would like to thank Elly Karuhanga for his exceptional hard work with Tullow over the past seven years. He has been a vital figure within Tullow Uganda as we successfully explored the Lake Albert Rift Basin and completed our farm-down to Total and CNOOC.”

Heavey also noted that he has “benefited greatly from his (Karuhanga’s) wise counsel and carefully considered advice and he will remain a firm friend to Tullow in Uganda”.


“As Tullow Uganda moves into the development phase, Jimmy Mugerwa and his team will take the lead in working with the Government and People of Uganda as we seek to implement our ambitious plans for Uganda’s oil and gas resources.”

When contacted, Karuhanga commented: “It has been an honour to have worked for Tullow during the pioneering phase of its work in Uganda. I will always be grateful to Tullow for giving me the opportunity to learn about and to serve in Uganda’s nascent oil sector.”

He added: “Tullow has the highest ethical standards and a true commitment to creating shared prosperity for all. I wish the management and staff of Tullow success in their work across Africa and beyond in the years to come.”

Who is Elly Karuhanga?

Hon. Elly Karuhanga, L.L.B has served as a Legal Counsel of Uganda of IBI Corp. Mr. Karuhanga is involved in certain corporate activities, such as expected joint ventures undertaken by IBI in Uganda and in anticipated exploration and mining license acquisitions.

He has also served as Managing Partner of Kampala Associated Advocates, Uganda’s leading law firm.

He served as President of Tullow Oil Uganda (Tullow Uganda), a subsidiary of Tullow Oil plc; two terms as a Member of Parliament; Senior State Attorney in the Ministry of Justice; Advocate of the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Uganda; United Nations General Assembly Delegate from Uganda; Delegate to the World Trade Organisation; Honorary consul of the Republic of the Seychelles; and Advisor to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, among other significant business and political achievements.

Throughout his career, Mr. Karuhanga has played a significant role in the advancement of the Ugandan Judicial system.

He has served as the Chairman of the CADRE (The Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution and Arbitration).

He has been an Independent Director of IBI Corp. since December 20, 2007.

He further served as the Director of Bankom Uganda Ltd and Canmin Gold Ltd., Director of Development Finance Company of Uganda Ltd. since May 2005, Director of Tullow Uganda and as Chairman of the Presidential and Foreign Affairs Committee.
