search geneva;”>The organization has Monday revealed that through their partnership UMEME aimed at reducing corruption within and outside the operations of UMEME work, they have been able to get illegal electricity users through their whistle blowing number.

It added that several culprits have been arrested for vandalizing transformers and other Umeme materials, prosecuted and sentenced in courts of law country wide.

“Umeme staff involved in cases of extortion have been investigated and summoned to the disciplinary committee. Our contact number (0312 360777) was sent to customers through SMS as a means of awareness in the month of July.”


It also stated that about four whistle blowers have been rewarded (10 percent) from cases raised to them.

The organization attributed the achievements to itself saying that because of the integrity call centre, is purely independent and manned by TIU staff.

“It boosts whistle blowers confidentiality with in UMEME and to those outside when reporting, as those reporting are kept confidential as investigations are followed to the completion.”

Transparency International Uganda, UMEME Ltd Integrity Call Centre started in July 2012 with the aim of assisting Umeme to curb on the high corruption rate within and out of Umeme.

“We also contact potential customers to gather information on corruption in Umeme, follow up on urgent queries and complaints raised by Umeme management/ whistle blowers. Timely reports are then provided with statistics, user rates and the performance levels are prepared and shared.”

The UMEME whistle blower number is 0312360777 to report illegal connections, a request for a bribe from their staff or anything you think is not right.
