13 Kabale Students Arrested Over Strike

Thirteen students of Kabale Trinity College are being detained at Kabale central police station on allegations that they led a strike in which a great deal of school property was destroyed.

Elly Maate the Kigezi regional police spokesperson says the arrested are accused of mobilizing their colleagues to use violence against the school administration.

At around 7 Pm on Sunday, price these are said to have rejected supper, alleging that it was not of the right quality.

“After rejecting it, they started shouting and causing commotion at the campus. In the process, they destroyed glasses on school structures,” said Maate.

Police arrived in time to disperse the students before arresting three of them identified as Amanya Kigoye-S.4, Derrick Ekinamushabire-S.4 and Bosco Niwabine-S.5.

More investigations led to the arrest of 10 other students, bringing the total number of arrested students 13.
Maate condemned acts of violence in schools saying that those arrested shall be produced before courts of law when investigations are complete.

Joab Tumwebarize, the School director confirmed the strike and condemned students for being ill-mannered. He said the students went on rampage only because they had not been served with cabbages.

“It is true we could not afford to give them the expected food but would that be the best approach to handle things. Students want us to act their way and we cannot tolerate that,” said Tumwebarize.
