Museveni Warns Buhweju Against Land Fragmentation

dosage geneva; font-size: small;”>Mr. Museveni was on Thursday addressing a delegation of 110 leaders from Buhweju district whom he received at his Rwakitura country home in Kiruhuura district.

He said that the practice has retarded development in different parts of the country particularly in the Kigezi sub-region.

He, therefore, advised the people to allot shares to their family members instead of fragmenting the land upon the death of family heads. He emphasized that family wealth can be well distributed through shares.

He called on religious leaders to sensitize the people about the vice and noted that land fragmentation was dangerous in respect to income generation.

The President noted that the people of Buhweju have been practicing traditional agriculture which is not compatible with modernity that requires money. He, however, commended them for their hard work through the cultivation of coffee, tea, fruits and dairy farming considering the area’s cool temperatures.


President Museveni said that the NRM Government had provided Buhweju district with a tea factory to enable the residents generate good household income. He commended the people of the area for their continued support to NRM through the years. He revealed that their area was given a district status mainly due to its being one of Uganda’s hard to reach zones.

He said that infrastructure development is good but the fundamental issue is household income. He pledged a donation of Shs.100 million to the Buhweju Veterans’ SACCO.

Buhweju LC5 Chairman, Mr. Sebastiano Kereere, saluted the President for his good leadership. He revealed that religious leaders in the district have spearheaded the promotion of household income generation.

Mr. Kereere reported that the roads which are supervised by the Uganda National Roads’ Authority (UNRA) in the district are in a bad state that calls for urgent attention.

In a bid to empower the people of Buhweju district more economically, Mr. Kereere appealed to government to intervene on the issue of roads, donation of dairy cows and also make arrangements that would give more leverage to the wananchi benefit from the extraction of various minerals in the district
