Up to eleven people in Sheema Municipality are nursing injuries following a clash between supporters of MP contestants Dicksons Kateshumbwa (NRM) and Dr Elioda Tumwesigye (Independent).
Dr Tumwesigye who is the incumbent MP lost the NRM flag to Kateshumbwa in last year’s party primaries.
Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson says the violence ensued at around 3pm on Sunday in Kyagaju central cell in Kabwohe division, Sheema municipality, where supporters of the two candidates met along the road following Minister Tumwesigye rally in Kyagaju central cell.
He says that good number of people mostly from Kateshumbwa’s side sustained injuries and that police had to rush in and contain the situation.
Tumusiime identifies the injured as Leocadia Nabulima, Brenda Agumenaitwe, Blessing Atuhame, Charlote Tumwebaze, Gilbert Kagame, Collins Kato, Jenan Mugasha, Brian Tumwebaze, Kenneth Bamwine, Michael Betunguura and Mirian Ahabwe.
Kateshumbwa blamed the violence on his rival Minister Tumwesigye.
“The violence on innocent people being orchestrated by a minister facing defeat is unacceptable,” he said.
Dr Tumwesigye on the other hand says the clashes were stage-managed by his rival to disrupt his campaigns as he has failed to contain the pressure.
He says that Katashumbwa connived with the area GISO and one Allan to stage-manage the incident.
