Speaker of Parliament Hon Rebecca Kadaga has marked 59 years of age while on a trip to the US. She was last evening surprised with a birthday cake by members of a US based Twegaite, an organization of development minded Basoga people living abroad.
The group was holding its annual convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota to fundraise for the completion of a Cancer Unit they are setting up at Jinja Hospital.
Born in back 1956 , Kadaga is one of Uganda’s most respected women , and its first ever Speaker of Parliament. Next year, she will be seeking another term as the Kamuli Woman Member of Parliament, a position she has held since 1989.
Joining the Speaker to mark her 59th birthday was Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda who represented President Yoweri Museveni, Jinja MP, Hon Moses Balyeku, and FDC’s Vice Chairperson for Easter Uganda Hon Salaam Musumba, Leader of Opposition Hon Wafula Oguttu, Miss Uganda Leah Kalanguka among others.
The delegation from Uganda also joined in a mini marathon; The Source of the Nile 5K Run at Mount Lake Normandale Park in Bloomington, Minnesota held for the same cause.
Delivering the President’s speech at the convention, Dr Rugunda expressed Uganda government’s appreciation to the noble efforts of the Twegaite members in the fight against cancer.
“Twegaite effort to build a Cancer treatment center at the Jinja Hospice is most commendable,” said the Prime Minister.
“Together we can transform the economic and social landscape and livelihoods of the people of Busoga. A key ingredient for the development of Busoga is good leaders who can work with government.”
According to Head of Jinja Hospital’s cancer Institute Dr. Fred Okuku, having a cancer unit in Busoga will relieve us a big burden and simplify a lot of things. He noted that Cancer has been on the rise in the country; with 300 to 400 women being diagnosed with breast cancer at the institute annually.
