A total of 6 candidates have pulled out of the National Resistance Movement party primary elections for the East African Legislative Assembly taking place at State House Entebbe.
The 300 ruling party Members of Parliament converged in Entebbe on Monday morning to pick 6 candidates out of the 43 contesting for the regional parliament.
The process was earlier delayed by contentions in the electoral guidelines presented by the party electoral commission chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi.
The Members of Parliament from Karamoja had protested the separation of Kampala from Central and making it a distinct region.
The ruling party will be selecting its EALA members on the basis of full representation of all regions of the country.
The matter later went up to the party Chairman, President Yoweri Museveni who advised that the Caucus should maintain the demarcation of the Central Executive Committee that gave Kampala a regional status.
Odoi also told Members that 2 women should be among the 6 candidates the Caucus members are going to elect.
Meanwhile before the campaigns began at 4pm, 6 candidates had withdrawn from the race leaving the chance to the remaining 37.
Those who stepped down included the former Commissioner of Parliament, Emmanuel Dombo, Michael Katungi and others. Each candidate has been given 5 minutes to present their manifesto to the voters.
