The Ugandan Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa has said that claims that Uganda didn’t vote for Kenya’s Amina Mohamed for the position of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission are baseless.
A diplomatic row erupted when it was alleged that Uganda refused to vote for Kenya’s Amina who went on to lose by 3 votes to the candidate from Chad Moussa Faki Mahamat during the African Union Assembly in Addis Ababa.
Reports indicated that South Sudan voted for Kenya but during the final stages, Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti and Tanzania did not.
Kutesa however, said that it would only be foolish for someone to claim that Uganda that had campaigned for Kenya’s candidate would at the last hour backstab their friends.
“I was the first person to endorse Amina Muhamed as the East African candidate when Uganda withdrew her candidature. I campaigned and attended meetings in Nairobi and Addis Ababa for her,” Kutesa told a news conference in Kampala on Friday.
“We went through 7 rounds but we voted for Amina right from the word go, until the 6th round when she was eliminated in accordance with the rules.”
The Ugandan Foreign Affairs Minister says that despite having a right not to vote for Kenya’s candidate, Uganda remained committed to the East African candidate.
He argued that in the 6th round, Chad’s foreign minister had more votes than Kenya’s Amina, making her go through to the final round but had to obtain two thirds of the votes despite being alone in the race.
“It was until the 7th round when the Chadian candidate was the only one in the race that we voted for the Chadian candidate. The claims are not only baseless but also annoying.”
“After having campaigned for her and somebody says we didn’t vote for Kenya’s Amina. We don’t have to vote for you because it is our right but went ahead to campaign and also voted in your favor.”
