Opposition Democratic Party (DP) president Norbert Mao has yielded to Pressure from several party members demanding for opening up contest of the position for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) representative.

The party had earlier announced that the National Executive Committee (NEC) had agreed to maintain the incumbent Fred Mukasa Mbidde as the party's sole candidate.

This however was seen by some party members led by the former National Chairman, Mohammed Kezaala as a move to ring fence the position for Mbidde locking out others from exercising their constitutional rights.

"We have received several complaints from different party members and have decided to open up the position for contest," Mao told the media on Tuesday.

Mao said, "Where we stand now, administratively, through the authority entrusted in us, there are people that are willing to contest for EALA; we have opened up a window for them to express interest before the party National Executive Committee (NEC) to choose the best candidate among them.

"The deputy SG and his office have released a call for nomination and those interested should prepare to appear before NEC on Friday February 3.

According to the guidelines issued, each member must pay a nomination fee of Sh350000, having been an active party member for the last five years.
