But at 11:51am, Democratic Party leader Nobert Mao tweeted: “I am here at Col. Kizza Besigye’s residence to pick him so we go for a meeting of opposition party leaders.”

Besigye has since Tuesday been placed under house arrest by police. IGP Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura said Monday opposition leaders organising mass protests under the cover of walk-to-work intend to bring down Museveni’s government.

However, opposition activists say they are walking to work to express dissatisfaction with the way government is handling the economy. They say Museveni’s government has flatly failed to find lasting solutions to rising cost of living, headline inflation and mass unemployment.

Responding to this, Museveni said on Sunday that inflation is caused by inadequate production to match the skyrocketing population growth rates.

Deputy Secretary to Treasury Keith Muhakanizi said government increased borrowing rates to control money in circulation.

The meeting will be attended by opposition legislators as well to forge a way forward on forming a united front.

The timing of the meeting is critical since the walk-to-work protests will culminate into a mass rally at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds tomorrow.

Police has since said the grounds are out of bounds for political activity unless allowed by Presidential security.
